can i go out in lake pontchartrain lacombe area and hunt from my canoe or do i have to be on certain pieces of land?

I've never been duck hunting either, but I would start by not doing it out of a canoe. Secondly, I'd get the lay of the land and try not to encroach on other peoples blinds.

Big Branch NWR
This is that area that you are talking about. Its a popular hunting area for northshore people and it has a lot of areas that are accessible by kayaks/canoes. If you launch from lake road in lacombe, you can access some good marsh to hunt in

me too. My dad hates duck hunting
but I'd like to get into it. I think next year I'll have a yak and might go after some woodies.

Yea thats where i primarily hunt, because all i have is a pirogue and kayak.
It stretches from cane bayou in fountainbleau all the way through slidell. Plenty of areas to hunt, and plenty of ducks to shoot. Since we are getting to the end of the season my recommendation would be to paddle through some areas, and learn the marsh. And next year do some scouting and look for vegetation for the birds.
O and i forgot to mention, the only stipulations with big branch is that you can only hunt Wed, Thur, Sat, and Sun. And only until noon. But its not a bad thing, it gives the birds a break from the constant pressure

are blinds set up out there? do you run into many people out there? kill any ducks? good place to learn to hunt?

You arent allowed any permanent blinds in the marsh. Whatever you bring in you bring out.
The only days you may run into people are opening days of the splits or on big holidays, but there is plenty of space to spread out. If you are willing to paddle then you can always find an area to yourself.
Its a great place to learn to hunt, but its a great place to get frustrated while hunting lol. some shoot limits all the time, other get a bird or too.
But its fun and lets you have access to a good area, whereas most places you need a boat

do you have certain areas you go in the refuge? or are you just trying out different areas?
Posted on 1/5/12 at 2:40 pm to lsufisherman
I'll be out there Saturday morning and possibly Sunday if not hung over too bad. I just learned duck hunting last year and have only been hunting at Big Branch.
If my buddies don't make it, I wouldn't mind taking you out on your first go.

Keep it with you. It's basically your hunting license for out there. Also it has all the rules.
DON'T SHOOT LEAD SHOT!!!!!!!! If it doesn't say Steel Shot on the box, it's Lead. Lead=Toxic Shot.

appreciate the offer, but i do not have gun, ammo, license, etc...
if i can get that stuff squared away maybe we can make it work one weekend.

Ive been hunting Big branch for the last three years and I like certain areas better than others, and i want to try some new areas. Its just about getting out there and trying areas.
I always hear shooting coming from the area closer to bayou liberty. And along the tree line (most likely woodies)
But there are plenty of areas to try around goose point and farther west toward cane bayou. But the western part of the refuge is more difficult to access via paddling.

Go to Academy (just dont hit on my wife).
Hunting License w/Duck stamps = $30 max
2 boxes Winchester Steel = $24 ($12 each)
Gun = Borrow one for the weekend from a buddy/relative
Things I've invested in since last year:
-New Semi Auto 12 guage
-Waders
-Pirogue
-Layers of Camo

Exactly where I go. Never been East of 434, but would love to. Just not familiar with that area.

NS, How has your hunting been this year?
Posted on 1/5/12 at 2:55 pm to NS Who Dat Nation
what all do you pack with you when you go? just sit in one spot all morning? decoys and stuff like that?
Posted on 1/5/12 at 2:57 pm to lsufisherman
Shitty. Haven't been but a handful of times and only got about 12 teal and 3 koots. No big duck this year yet. What about the East side?
Got my trolling motor rolling now so I'm willing to explore anywhere.
Do you hunt out of the boat or get out and hide at a pond? We get out.

The first time I ever went duck hunting, I didn't own anything. I just showed up at 4am and went hunting with my buddies in my basic camo. They taught me everything and I asked a million questions. It turns out I was valuable as it helps to have spotters.
Plus you need to know what to look for so you can identify Teal and Big Ducks. Need to make sure you dont shoot Pelicans or Tweety Birds.

what kind of gun do you get? how do you know what you can can't shoot?
seems like all very stupid questions!
