Kiel's Commitment: Refreshing Change

How nice to see a young man commit to a school without the pageantry and machinations of a circus sideshow. No ball cap double- and triple-switches - disrespecting other coaches and programs by donning the cap of school A, then throwing it to the floor in lieu of another. No compelling need to have an ego stroked by hoards of local media and recruitniks. No brash talk or predictions of future greatness.
This guy handles himself really well. I’m impressed by his comments about the program, his visit and future teammates. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders - the fact that he’s a 5-star is gravy.

Gunner & his family definitely went out of their way to make his announcement as anti-circus/ego-centric as possible by releasing minimal info & letting a family friend (& aspiring journalist) break the news.
However, in keeping tight-lipped, it in fact became one of the largest circus sideshow's I've ever witnessed as an LSU fan.
For about 5 days straight, it was just as unnervingly crazy as the eve of the Joe McKinight & Rueben Randle announcements.
ND, Vandy & LSU fan bases were rabidly hanging on every single tweet, report, rumor, hoax, innuendo, hearsay, & whisper...only it took place over the Christmas weekend in which the "special X-Mas present" idea gave it an unprecedented bizarre-ness.

I believe a lot of this is fueled by the rumor mongers. Every once in a while someone may have a morsel of information that turns out to be correct, but they seem to be falling over each other to put out stuff before the other guy, and many times it's about as accurate as the flip of a coin.

Well said. With everyone pressuring him and his family to make a decision and the kid really wanting to make the right decision, they are to be commended for they way they handled it.

I'm very impressed with Kiels family. Just because the media goes nuts doesn't mean they were responsible for the circus it became. Guy is a great kid.

miles seems to recruit hi-quality young men and they mesh together real well. team chemistry is damn important. the qb is expected to be a leader and kiel really seems like he is indeed a leader. the player that constantly needs his ego stroked often turns into a cancer on a team and LSU doesn't need that. i don't care if LSU never wins the "recruiting" NC; i think we are a better team with a mixture of talent, the right attitude and the right coaches. oh, and something that is really important to me; LSU graduates their players!

What other top football programs besides Notre Dame and Vanderbuilt were recruiting him? I started following this when LSU had a chance and didn't see who else was interested along the way.

I agree that Gunner and the Kiel family went about the decision in the right way. The media speculation was not their fault and I am thrilled to have what seems to be a very high class individual on the Tigers. The fact that he is also the #1 rated QB in theright country just makes his attitude that much more refreshing.

I know Bama, Mizzou, Michigan, & USC were in it at one point or another.
Oklahoma, Stanford, Florida, Georgia, Purdue, Mich St, Tenn, Wisconsin, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, & Indiana all offered him.

His early commitment to IU kept most schools away, I believe. When he de-committed he expressed interest in the three schools you mentioned. I think Arky and a few other schools made a late push.

Says a lot that he chose LSU considering the QB troubles we have had over the past 4 years, and the rather mediocre numbers in the passing game. He must really like what he sees.

Didn't he make a committment to Indiana and then de-committed after that? Don't get me wrong I never took all the stuff personally like you guys do but when this happens to LSU which isn't often suddenly the kid is garbage. I guess it's all about your perspective. These kids are 18 years old and people should cut them some slack. Major college football is a multi million dollar business and these universities are making tons of money off these kids. They should play where they are most comfortable.

He's got a brother playing at IU and he committed really, really early.

Gunner's friend talks about Gunner and his family.

Someone else can make a thread if they feel it deserves it. There are too many right now though.

The subject matter of that article was very nice, but the authors writing skills are atrocious.

BUT STILL, a very nice testimonial.
