Saban kind of took a chance on 1 or 2 "character" issues every year - Tim Pope comes to mind as another high risk/high reward play that did not pan out.

Miles has had, strangely, off-the-field issues with kids of reasonably solid character (JJ, Ware, Mathieu) - the biggest gamble he took was Perrilloux and that turned out good and bad. Thank G-d he was on the team for the 2007 SEC-CG, but all of our QB eggs were in that river parishes basket for 2 years and it cost us.
