Pick play Alabama uses - will refs call it?

I noticed in at least 2 of the big gains Alabama had against LSU they "picked" the linebacker off that was suppose to be guarding Richardson with a blocker (pretending to go out for a pass).... I know this is illegal in the pros and pretty sure it is in college...........and I've noticed against other teams Alabama does this a lot. Is this ever called??

Thanks for pointing that out - have to go back now and watch that.

They did it numerous times against Auburn to get Smelley open for 3rd down catches. The guy picking was pretty blatant in the way he ran right into the DB. Danielson called it out several times so hopefully Miles will make a note of it to the referees before the game and they will call it if it is as blatant as it was in the Auburn game.
Looked like in the 2nd half LSU covered Richardson from the outside instead of inside so pick didnt work!

they won't call holding on their O line.....why would we believe they will call a pick play?

Agreed but I believe we will have Big 12 refs please correct me if I misheard but I am hoping that is the case. If so set your DVR's you may see a Bama Olineman called for holding, possibly more than once but once might be a record as it is.

I kept waiting for a flag to be thrown but alas nothing.

Yea that is why I am hoping it is Big 12 officials. Cant be any worse than SEC and Bama might actually get called for their holds and pick plays.
It was very blatant in the Auburn game. Would imagine Chiz pointed it out by the 2nd or 3rd time at the latest but it was never called.

What message boards are big in the Big 12? Maybe they know if Big 12 officials ever call it. Maybe if they dont LSU needs to install a couple of those plays.

How could you call this or even make a rule against it? It's not like their sending a receiver to block -- they're creating congestion and playing off of that

The rule already exists. They are sending a wr to block. Watch the games the wr runs right into the db or lber.

yep, it was obvious against Lsu, and more obvious against Auburn.

Thank you for pointing that out I said the same thing the other day while watching the replay. The biggest receiving gain richardson had was off a blatant pick by maze. Maze could have almost been called for holding as his arms were wrapped around the linebacker.

The crossing receivers never come in contact with the defenders. In fact, it is often defenders running into each other that allows the receivers to get open.
Big 12 teams run lots of intricate pick or rub routes and I have never seen it called. It is almost never called unless a receiver actually blocks downfield while the ball is in the air.
It is really the only way our receivers can separate from your secondary. I expect we will see a lot of it.

Pick plays are illegal; rub plays are not.
Does anyone have any video?

It becomes a pick if the receiver runs into a defender. If he runs a crossing route and stops short of contact, requiring the defender to run around him, it is a rub and is legal. The defense doesn't own the field and receivers can run crossing routes. Just like a screen in basketball is not illegal, unless you are moving.
