I've made this argument before and agree with most of what you say, but how can you say there was no clear offensive front runner in 1997. To me, because Woodson beat out Manning, it provides even more fuel to the fire that Mathieu should win this year. There is no offensive player of Manning's caliber in this year's race, so it should be easy to vote for Mathieu. He seems to have made a huge surge since Saturday night, by the way. See my posts over the last few weeks on this topic.

I guess I should've explain what I meant. At the beginning of the season in both were a clear front runner A. Luck 2011 & Peyton Manning 1997. With Luck losing to Oregon, and Manning not being able to beat UF AGAIN. Both having great season, but by no means considering the two guys talent level (Luck & Manning) not all-time great. The ladder part of the season in 1997 there wasn't a clear offensive leader. Just as there hasn't been this year. That's why CW was able to win going away. His punt return against OSU solidify his case. TM7 had two PR for TD's both changed HUGE games in LSU's favor.

Great logic. Too bad those with the ability to chose awards, rankings, etc. rarely use it. College football is essentially one big case of "groupthink."

Recent ex: Alabama is the #1 team in the country in '09 and Mark Ingram is the "best" player on that team. Therefore he MUST be the best player in the country. (Just ignore the fact that MSU's Dixon may have been the best RB in the SEC in 2009)

Bama deserves to play for the NC because their only loss was by 3 pts. to the #1 team in the country (Just ignore the fact that 2006 Michigan had the EXACT same argument, yet somehow did not deserve to play for the NC)

Tyrann Mathieu isn't a serious candidate for the Heisman when compared to someone like Andrew Luck who is the consensus #1 pro prospect (Just ignore the fact that Mathieu, a DB and PR for the #1 team has arguably has better stats than Woodson, a DB and PR for the #1 team in 97, who was up against the consensus #1 pro prospect)
