In addition to the McAllisters never calling the cops back to see if they'd checked up on Kevin, this is the most glaring plot hole in the movie.

The movie attempts to explain it away as the McAllisters are rushing out to the airport when the lineman says the phone lines are a mess, but Kevin orders a pizza fairly early on, the McAllisters are able to leave a message on their neighbor's machine around the same time, and Kevin calls the cops at the end.
