I want to over analyze the scene where Kevin lines up all the action figures and army men on the laundry chute and proceeds to shoot them all, knocking them to the basement.
I believe this is Kevin's subconscious acting out that he really wants to kill his entire family for the years of abuse and mistreatment. He has planned out to shoot them and leave them in the basement, where the furnace lives. If I remember correctly, one of the figures is Michael Jordan. When this movie was made, MJ would have been ultimate hero of any boy Kevin's age who lived in Chicago. With Kevin shooting MJ, this shows that he has lost all hope in humanity and even his lifetime hero could not save him from his destiny of killing his entire family one day.
