Every week, I hear from media galmorizing us for having the BEST guard tandem in the NFL. If two of the five of the line are the very best in the league, then how is rushing for us so incredibly difficult? Are our Tackle and Center tandem that pitiful or is there something more? It seems logical that running lanes should be open for us sense teams expect us to be pass heavy and lined up in more nickel and dime packages. I just don't understand why draws, isos and dive plays are not more successful against these defensive packages.

My honest opinion of why our run game sucks is scheme. We never run counter, cut back, or mis direction running plays. It's always straight down hill man on man running. All that means is if one guy is left uncovered that guy will usually make the tackle.

On the flip side, one of the reasons our short passing game is so so good is because of our scheme. We really have to take the good with the bad here and hope our line plays better down the stretch.

Stinch "the man everyone loved to hate other than Shanle" is no longer here and Jonathan Goodwin plays for 6-1 San Francisco 49ers now. That's two superbowl starters on our o-line no longer on the team. As good as our guard tandem may be, two guys can't take on their blocking assignments and those of DLP and Brown. One weak link screws up the entire o-line and we may have two.

Serious question. If the guards are so good why can't we put one of them at RT ?

To take advantage of guard play, btw the tackle running, we MUST have a center that can at least put a body on the Nose/DT. We haven't had that this year.

Ivory running tentatively really showed me yesterday the RBs are seeing DEF players as soon as they get the ball. Our Center is a weak link and teams know it. In the NFL teams scheme towards weaknesses. Hence the runs and passes at Shanle and Porter this year.

Funny that you mention that. Carl Nicks played left tackle at Nebraska. I bet he would be a fine run blocking right tackle but I'm afraid he is so rusty on pass protection that he would get Brees killed by a speedy edge rusher. If he gets moved out of his position, who is going to play LG?

Our running game is so vanilla it is pathetic. Really, we ain't going anywhere without a better running game.
