can anyone answer how long the current yellow/gold hue has been used?
Seems, just from recollection, to have occurred around 2000 or so. The 90s were a lot less 'yellowey' than today's unis.

1890's maybe. LSU has been using the Canary Yellow/Gold since the late 50's. I've been going to games since the 1960's and it's been the Canary Yellow since then, with only minor shade differences.
Don't know how the official school colors came to be called Royal Purple and Old Gold, because LSU got its original colors during Mardi Gras (Search Tulane -LSU original football game) and the MG shade of gold is the Canary Yellow that LSU uses.
