Uhh no people actually say it. I am one of those people and so is just about every person I know. But the whole scenario of going into a restaurant and ordering a "coke" only for the waitress to ask you "what kind?" is complete bullshite. That just doesn't happen. Would you go to the bar and simply say "can I have a beer"?
eta: NVM thought you were responding to the OP. I'm not actually sure what you meant.

Well you may not order that, but look at the lunch special... Hamburger and a Coke... it never says Hamburger and a Pop/Cold Drink/Soda.
