playing both ways fell out of favor

What happened was that they changed the substitution rules. In Dietzel's day, you couldn't do free substitution every down, or even after changes of possession, so players had to be able to go both ways. The Chinese Bandits were indeed third stringers--some of them walk ons--but they developed into a fierce, primarily defensive and special teams, unit. The little vaguely Chinese ditty the band plays started back then, and was the motif (theme song)for the Chinese Bandits on the television show that was a spinoff from the comic strip.
