I lived in Ohio from 1995-96. I traveled a lot for work and spent a fair amount of time in Fairmont, WV, about 25 miles south of Morgantown.

Rural WV is a complete shock to the senses. It's like jumping back 50 years in time. A lot of the barns have tobacco ads on the sides of them. Apparently this was very common before all of the information came out about the dangers of smoking. It's like the area is stuck in time in pre-1950s America... before suburbanization began.

The cities had a very old industrial/rust belt feel to them. Very similar to Pittsburgh, which is closer to WV than most probably realize. That having been said, my only experience in Morgantown is driving through it on the interstate.

It is a beautiful region. I've been to 44 states, and in terms for nature/scenery, I'd definitely say it is the best I've seen east of the Rockies.
