One of the very few schools that has an SEC mentality around football. I could see them being a great fit with a natural rival in USCe.

frick no to another "tiger" with a faux "death valley"

besides, as has been discussed at length, no teams from SEC states will be added.

I don't frequent this board enough to know what has been discussed ad nausem. Who cares what their mascot name is, the name of the stadium, or what songs the band plays -- if that is even a consideration in your mind then it is good you aren't the commissioner. Hopefully you are only joking though.

To not add a team from an SEC state...you need teams like:

A&M
Missouri?
Virginia Tech?
West Virginia?

I have no desire to add West Virginia...or Missouri (even with it opening up the STL market). Tech seems like a decent option.

you can count out all acc teams, as the buyout to leave that conference was just raised to $20mm.

someone, either the lsu chancellor or mike slive, said that expansion would come to new states. expansion options are getting slim.
aTm
TCU
WVU
Mizzou
TTech

also, i doubt the sec further raids the bevo 9 unless the conference collapses, as slive doesnt want to be a conferences downfall. too much potential litigation.

It all depends on how the SEC wants to balance its revenue growth versus its character/esteem as a conference.

Ideally, I would like to see the SEC target large growth markets while also targeting programs that can excel once they have the 'SEC' brand and revenue to support their programs.

A&M
Clemson
South Florida
Missouri

*Assumes teams like FSU, UNC, Virginia, Virginia Tech, are not available.

In the case of what you just listed...swap Clemson for TCU and call it a day.

You get to 16, have programs that have excellent potential for growth, and enter new markets.

I would too. Very solid academics, good football and baseball...SEC-ish type school and atmosphere.

Exactly. How much does 20 mm represent to the SEC financially? That sounds like a big number but it might not be important long-term.

20 mm is exactly 20 mm more than they would have to pay if the stayed in the acc. That is for Clemson to pay, the SEC would be liable to baylor like litigation as well.

The real question is, how much more would an sec tv contract be worth in comparison to a new acc tv contract with 14 members, and how long would it take to make up that $20mm difference?

I think its pretty clear that it would not be worth the headache

That would make them a perfect East rival.

But they don't bring anything to the table that the SEC doesn't already have.

Can you see the $20 million buy-out? You want the SEC to add a buy-out surcharge to each and every game ticket sold from here on out at all SEC schools? Got any other realistic suggestions on how to pay for this? Forget the ACC and if WVU wants in, let's be glad and lay out the welcome mat.

Clemson is a much better school to add than WVU.

I don't think this is as simple as you make it out to be--paying the $20m very well could still be a higher ROI than staying in the ACC. I do not know enough about the specific financials at play for either Clemson or the SEC.

I think you are simplifying the situation a little by automatically assuming the fine makes it a poor financial decision.

This is similar to a company blindly believing that outsourcing an IT department is automatically the best decision because labor is much cheaper in India. In most cases, yes it saves the company money but it is not always the most appropriate decision. You should at least consider the alternatives.

i fail to see how WVU is somehow considerably worse than Clemson, and it would have to be a considerable difference to make up for the cash.

add in what has already been said about locations for expansion, and desire to stay away from fricking up another conference, and i just dont see clemson as a viable option.

IF the sec was going to go after an ACC team from within a SEC state, it would be FSU first and foremost.

It has already been said why Clemson would be a good fit for the SEC...what makes WVU seem like a good fit other than A) it is free and B) it is looking for a home?

wvu has a similar atmosphere and fanbase as clemson, and are currently a better program.
