SEC Spineless?

But a weak player has emerged in the mess, and it comes from the most unlikely of ports. The Southeastern Conference.
The mighty SEC looks awfully spineless in this crazy story. The lords of college football are letting the president of Baylor hold up their expansion plans. We haven’t seen anything like this since Tiananmen Square. Kenneth Starr has led a Big 12 revolt — the league and its members have backtracked on the letter sent by Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe last week, saying the league and its members would not sue Texas A&M or the SEC, should the Aggies bolt for that conference.

I don't blame them. This was posted by someone else in another thread, but I'll steal it. Baylor is Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. You can probably get the knife from her, but do you really want to mess with that crazy bitch.
Baylor, the new 'B' in BSC.

Dude definitely has an agenda or is being puppeted by OU to run this up the flag pole.
Looks to me like OU wants the SEC to take the spear in the chest by inviting A&M rather than OU take it for bolting to the PAC first.

We're still outsiders on this one, but I'll say that I have total faith in Slive and the SEC. We've all been working overtime to manage this situation and I believe the SEC's qualification was a perfect attempt to flush the ridiculousness out into the open.
The threatened lawsuit is a joke. The SEC hasn't said it won't take A&M one way or another soon, they just dropped a hammer saying, "if you're going to try and screw with us then stop doing it with last minute behind the scenes shenanigans - do it in full view of the country where you will become accountable for your actions."
As an Ag, it pains me to delay the official, final announcement - but I believe the Ags will be there in 2012 and I believe the SEC is handling things like the big dog they are.

The SEC has 5 straight BCS NC's and a BCS Bowl record that is a mile ahead of everyone else. We have the highest attendance and the most money. We do not need A&M.
Why in the hell would we go to court or drag ourselves through mud in order to add A&M? No offense to A&M. The SEC has it right. The SEC will sit back and let A&M get their house in order. We aren't desperate.
It's A&M that needs us. Let them come without drama and baggage that drags the SEC into court.

You still think this is about wins/losses? It's about $. Adding Texas A&M = more $. It's really that simple.

I understand what it's about.
But the SEC doesn't need A&M. A&M would be a natural selection for expansion but the SEC most certainly shouldn't open itself up to lawsuits in order to add a team that needs it more than it needs them.
Would the Big 10 or Pac Whatever go to court to add Rice? I'm not flaming A&M here but you're not worth that trouble. The SEC is doing just fine without you.
With that said, welcome. You will be a nice addition. But you're going to have to take care of your life at home before you are given an SEC T-Shirt.

It's only been one day. The SEC or A&M would be irrational to start making threats and ultimatums and inviting lawsuits.
Give them time to negotiate and see what Baylor wants.
We'll judge whether anyone is spineless at the end of the fiasco, not when things are still going on behind closed doors.

Maybe the SEC is being quiet because all of the OU OSU talk to the Pac 12 is a head fake. If they are seriously considering moving, I think they are looking east, not west. Geographically at least this makes sense.

I actually tend to agree that the SEC shouldn't go to court for all of this. Texas A&M will inevitably be an SEC member, and rushing into a legal battle would be ridiculous. This is on us (or really, Beebe for being the shittiest commissioner in any athletic conference on the planet) and Baylor for being difficult, to put it kindly.
Posted on 9/8/11 at 1:34 pm to ChrisTAMU
exactly. passing blame to the SEC is a pile of bullshite. Big 12, Baylor, TAMU.. own your ineptitude.

the SEC is fricked either way. they can: proceed with caution, try and add teams gracefully by getting approval, and be spineless for not wanting an extra lawsuit on their hands. or, they could throw their weight around, tell everyone to stick it up their asses and do what they want, and then we are pompous a-hole hillbillies with no class and no teeth. sounds like a real win/win
the SEC is being smart. some early finessing and we avoid a money consuming law suit. seems reasonable and deliberate, not spineless

I don't know how we've been inept. We've been patient with this, had it all lined up and had a written promise from the commissioner of the B12 that there would be no legal action from any institution. Then, they retract that promise and everyone wants to keep their right to sue. I suppose we could be blamed for trusting the worst commissioner in all of sports.

I'm gonna go ahead and call it. TAMU OU OSU and probably Missouri to the SEC. The Big 12 is an unstable conference with some inviting targets. I'm sure the Big10 would love to have them as well.
Schools like FSU Clemson, Louisville and GA Tech would be blocked. Duke and North Carolina isn't going to happen either. West Virginia and and Va Tech are options, but they are in a pretty stable conference.

With all due respect, you do not have the most money. A PAC or B1G with a footprint in the state of Texas will have the most money when it's all said and done, and by a wide margin.
The SEC wants a piece of this pie, that's why it wants (not needs) A&M or t.u. And as you have seen with your own eyes, A&M is the better option unless you want DeLoss Dodds trying to relocate conference HQ to Austin in a few years.

you're inept because you let it get to this spot in the first place. TAMU has no clout and can't handle the Longhorns so they try to jump ship and come begging to the SEC for entrance into a far superior conference to which they inherently don't belong.

Everyone knew Baylor was fricking nuts.
No one (well, not that many) knew aggy was too.
You handled this one on the front pages of sports media and one clown on bulletin boards. We tried to warn you on the first President's meeting to slow the pace down and give us a chance to find a 14th. You pushed harder, faster. Your bow tie inbred hasn't helped your campaign thus the second President's meeting with qualifications. Sounds smart to me.

We have plenty of clout because the PAC and the B1G want the Texas market, and we're the biggest program without a $300 million network albatross around our neck.
We are getting away from the Longhorns because we are tired of two faced posturing and back door dealing. We are leaving the XII period, whether the SEC takes us or not. We highly prefer the SEC because we're a cultural fit and because we think it's the best conference in the land. If it doesn't work out, fine, we'll shake hands and say thanks for trying. We're then on our way to another conference...not as good as yours...while you remain happy and watch Larry Scott or Jim Delaney smile all the way to the bank.
All of the above should be pretty obvious by now. And Slive doesn't scramble jets to Atlanta for someone with no clout.
