Another LSU/UO game analysis. I promise he's credible.

And not just b/c of his selection.

Guy really is a college football encylopedia. I'm sure any Tigers in Houston can confirm.

quote:

Mustang on 3, Mustang on 3... 1, 2, 3... MUSTANG!
For years, teams have been trying to find ways to beat the spread offense and no one really had a solution for beating Oregon's dynamic spread offense last year. The Ducks' ability to force teams to play the entire 53 yards width of the field is a killer because of the straight line speed of All-American running back LaMichael James. When he has a seam in the middle of the defense, he's gone, pure and simple.

But, Oregon's horizontal stretch offense forces a defense to its limits, but LSU found an answer to that last season and perhaps not even by design. John Chavis, LSU's defensive coordinator put six defensive backs on the field, and not just in passing situations. The Tigers have taken one step closer to keeping six defensive backs on the field permanently by moving former safety Karnell Hatcher to linebacker.

What I love about Chavis' use of the six defensive backs is the fact that he'll often use one to blitz and play like another linebacker and sometimes that can be playmaker Tyrann Mathieu. Using the Mustang package is a must against Oregon to match up a bit better with Oregon's play makers. Where the Mustang is most valuable is when Oregon wants to use Josh Huff and Kenjon Barner on speed sweeps out of the gun. When they get a step on the DE or LB, they're gone. But, the Tigers are going to be able to stay with them and perhaps shut down any down hill lanes those two speed merchants may be used to finding.

I don't recall any other article I've read that gives specifics relative to schemes besides this one... speaking of the wheel route weakness not the dime pkg. So the speculators pick UO and this guy picks LSU.. me likey.

I will say as a non biased analyst John Harris is as good as they get. He has been on in Houston radio for quite some time and he can name 90% of every player on every division team. He studies each and every game somehow. Definately a college football encyclopedia....

Hope he is right. It will definately be a gmae of momentum. It could snowball on either team both good or bad.

I find it highly unlikely that Chip Kelly will game plan against LSU like he did agaisnt AU. I have no doubt that he was scheming for LSU as soon as the NC game was over. LSU will see some new looks. But in all fairness I don't see UO running wild on LSU. In the NC game Darron Thomas blew some reads and that was bad for the Ducks. Every possesion counts in games like this, so hopefully he learned something in the off season. Still not bad for a 1st year starter.

That's the most impactful variable in the game equation and no one is talking about it... the team that plays the best will win. these teams are evenly matched, it's going to come down to execution.

So, all you prognosticators --- which team will be better prepared to execute their gameplan ?

The Tigers of course with Les at the helm. Always prepares well when he's had time.
