Ad Nauseum topic: Why does MIZZOU make so much sense?
Posted on 8/16/11 at 9:04 am

if anyone wants to link me to a previous discussion on this, it would be appreciated
i understand why GT, Clemson, Miami, Louisville, and FSU would be out because of current SEC school objections
why does MU makes sense over schools like OU, UNC, or VT?

Because most of the schools you listed other than Louisville aren't dumb enough to leave an easier confernece that is in no danger of folding for an already tougher conference that is about to get a lot tougher to win so your options at that point are kind of limited.
There is just no logical sense whatsoever for a top tier team like FSU, VT or OU to join the SEC. I imagine Clemson and Miami probably feel the same way as well. GT might be the only one that would make the jump but I just don't see the SEC taking them.
At some point in time you have to way the risk/reward. Is the slight increase in money a big enough reward for an OU, VT or FSU to risk their relatively easy paths to the BCS and chance slipping in the national view of their program when the start falling to lower/mid tier bowls more often?

It doesn't Mizzou belongs in the big ten or a reconfigured big 12 with Kansas, Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma, and Okie Statel.
St. Louis and Kansas City are much more Northern Cities than Southern cities. Plus the SEC doesn't gain much with the Southern parts of Missouri.
You've heard the joke that if you gave the Northern Half of Missouri to Iowa you'd bring down the IQ of both states.

Well it's documented that they want out of the B12. The B10 already rejected them.
OU, UNC don't seem like a fit in the SEC. OU is apparently scared to leave UT, and UNC is a BBall school.
VT would work in the SEC.

Mizzou makes more sense in the Big 10...one of their biggest rivals is Illinois.
The SEC landing OU and A&M would be huge.
They are the only two teams that we could add that would make me excited.

OU will go west if offered
their high-level leadership is, for lack of a better phrase, an intellectual snob. they would rather their university be aligned with Cal and Stanford then Alabama and Florida (which are both good schools)

I take it you have never been to Iowa.

I heard Tim Brando on the radio today say that OU sees themselves as a higher class institution academics-wise. They would rather be associated with Stanford & Cal in the PAC-12/14/16 than with schools such as Alabama & LSU.
EDIT: Rouge beat me to it.

Personally I think Mizzou AD and President want the Big Ten over the SEC. Easier victories and geographically a better fit for playing Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Northwestern, Indiana than playing LSU, Ole Miss, Bama, Auburn, Tenn, etc.
Mizzou going to the SEC will hurt them in regards to keeping fans. Missouri is not major college football state. Fans love High School football and follow their local Div 2 or 1aa teams, then it's the passion for the NFL. If Mizzou moves to the SEC and be a .500 team each year their fan base will drop. I'm sure they'd finish above .500 each year in the Big Ten.

It's hard enough finding die hard Missouri fans outside of Columbia as it is now. I can only imagine what it would be like if they were routinely getting drilled in the SEC.

I wonder if that would be a tough sell for recruits and its own fan base. I find the Pac-10 to be pretty boring, and hardly ever watch their games (because I don't find their teams too interesting and many of the games are late due to them being on the West Coast).
If I am a recruit in Texas and have a chance to play in the SEC or the Pac-10, I would imagine that the SEC would have the advantage.

I have no problem MIZZOU joining the SEC or West Virgina for that matter.

If I am a recruit in Texas and have a chance to play in the SEC or the Pac-10,
if OU went west right now, you might see 4-5 straight OU-UO title games (much like at the beginning to the SECCG with Bama-florida)

OU has OSU
UNC has duke
VT has UVA
its difficult to break any of those bonds. anyone thinking its going to be VT is crazy, politics are way to deep in that one.

yet somehow Florida/FSU, Georgia/Georgia Tech, Clemson/S. Carolina and Kentucky/Louisville still make it work

Yeah in Southern Missouri there's more Missouri State fans(Springfield,MO) and Arkansas and OU fans(Joplin area) than Mizzou fans. We already get the morning SEC football games in Southern Missouri.

no they dont.
its the exact same situation, yet opposite. FSU will not be in the sec because UF says no, etc.
its really pretty obvious

It doesn't, but I don't think those schools are options.
I like the Missouri option. I think it's good to increase the footprint of the SEC. Bring in some new markets and shake things up a little. Adding A&M and Missouri would be great additions.

i wasnt referring to playing each other. if aTm and UT dont play anymore past 2011 its because of arrogance and being butt hurt.
quote:

i am.
there were A LOT of political dealings that got VT into the ACC. remember that the original ACC expansion plan was to have Syracuse, not VT. there is zero chance that the politicians, most of who graduated UVA would allow VT to leave the ACC so quickly after pulling strings to get them in. That would crush UVA both in terms of a death blow to the ACC and would leave a lot of egg on their face.
in that same vein, there is no way that UF and its political influence is going to allow FSU into the SEC.
hence my point that the situations are equal but opposite.
