I read something somewhere that those and the ones of their ilk are designed after motorcycle helmets, hence the rounded nature of the cage and wider-set helmet. More of a rounded overall design than just a form-fitting helmet with a flat facemask. Also a lot safer.
I think I'd prefer safer players and have ugly facemasks.
