Thinking about doing a roadtrip up to TN for the away game

LSU's fall break starts Oct. 13, the football game is on the 15th, and I have a half a dozen or so friends that are interested in heading up for a couple of days of camping up in the Smokies. We would probably leave the Wednesday class lets out and drive up that afternoon. That should make four nights. I know tourism is supposed to be extremely busy that time of year, but we are trying to explore our options. I've been up to TN (Gatlinburg, Cades Cove, the national park, etc.) a couple times when I was a kid on vacation, but I'm not exactly sure where to start as far as planning goes. If girls come, cabins will probably be utilized as well, which complicates matters.
If anyone has any past experience with this or can offer suggestions about how to make this an affordable trip for college students, that would be great.

Just google cabins in smoky mountains. You can stay in Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg. Very close together but probably 30-45 minute drive to game. If you camp contact the Smoky Mountain Visitor center for information on the campsites available. Start early cause it is the most popular time of the year for visitors up there. Cram a bunch of you in a cabin if the girls tag along.

I always stayed in Townsend. It was a lot less involved then, might have changed. I stayed the Laughing Horse Inn, but the had added some cabins to their options.
Women might opt for the other 2 areas mentioned.
If you don't get in the mountains early, you'll spend a lot of time in traffic at that time of year.

What do you want to do? Just camp and drink? Rock climb? Trout fish? Bow hunt? Hike?

Townsend area way better and you can access thru Knoxville via highway 129
Do all you can to avoid the exit 407 off interstate 40
Also look into the Cataloochee area of Smoky Mountains, elk will be in rut and it is not frequented like Tenn side of park but the road to get there is gravel and many hate it but worth the ride.

I live in mississippi and I go to a tennessee game every year. Pigeon forge is reasonably close gatlinburg is a little further out. Either way will take you a decent hr to get to knoxville because of the traffic this time of year. Fall time in the smokies is very very busy. Townsend is nice place but nothing to do there at all. We normally stay in hotel off of strawberry plains which is right between knoxville and pigeon forge..this is VERY good because they send a big bus out to the hotel a couple hrs before gametime to pick you up, and bring you back from Neyland. Believe me you will be needing this because it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to find a park within 5 miles of the stadium. If you want to stay in a cabin i have some information on one right outside of pigeon forge (roughly 45 min from knoxville) send me a email at black_lab_bird_dog@yahoo.com. I go to tennessee at least 3 times a year and know the area pretty well i'll help you any way i can.

Thanks a lot of the info. I very much appreciate all the replies. Schwartz, thanks for the suggestion, but that may be a little bit steep for our group.
As for activities, the trip will mostly consist of beer drinking and acoustic guitar jamming. We will probably do a lot of day hiking and check out trails and waterfalls. May rent bikes or tubes at Cades Cove. We will probably bring tents and camp out at least one night. I fish a decent amount in LA at a stock lake for bass, but have no experience with trout fishing or fly fishing.
