I'm currently learning Directx with C++. I am not taking any official classes (not my major), but this is a fun thing to develop and is related. Any advice or good game programming courses/books here? I'm currently reading Intro to 3D Game Programming with Directx 10 and the DirectX tutorials, which I would recommend.

How easy has it been to teach yourself so far? I was thinking about trying

Programming is pretty easy if you have the logical and methodical mind needed to debug the code you write.

All in all, it's possible but it takes patience and dedication. It's not hard in the sense that if you devote enough time and do it right, you will learn things sequentially. Now, if you want to learn quickly, you will need to use a guide of some sort and have at least a cursory familiarity with any prerequisite knowledge.
To illustrate, let's say you want to start out modding games. To get any further than merely changing variables and images around, you'll probably need to know how structs, classes, and functions work. Game engines are also very heavy on pointers, so that will be a prerequisite as well.
Not to discourage you from jumping right in, of course. The preliminaries shouldn't take too long, just make sure you have Google nearby and do a few exercises which help you memorize that knowledge.

All in all, it's a very enjoyable and rewarding thing to learn, and will help you develop many transferable skills. I would recommend that you get a C++ book or find a good C++ tutorial site and use it to look up any concepts you are unfamiliar with when they are mentioned in whatever game programming tutorial you are reading.

By the way, I'm at the point where I create code which creates basic models and custom shaders.

When you're ready to make games, you should come here for suggestions.

I'd like to see a game called Bad LSU Fan, where we get to throw whiskey bottles, urine bags, footballs, etc. at opposing fans and burn their vehicles

Who then wakes up, rolls over and fricks his sister before getting out of bed to brush his tooth.
