Is it even possible to start a career with a team in the MLS and work up enough funds and prestige to sign a European star? If so, how long did it take you to do it? And if not, frick this game.

Well, in 10 it was pretty much impossible to sign a big player so you would end up scouting a ton of young talent and it wasn't long until you were tearing people up. In 11 they cut out the talent development, which I think is bullshite, but still made it extremely hard to sign people. I didn't stick around to find out, especially with all the glitches in manager mode.
For instance, in 10 I way kicking arse and moved up to coach inter in my 3rd season. All the sudden I look at the team finances and I am like 300 million in debt. Now, I know inter is not a financially savvy team, but that is insane. Turns out there was a glitch where you automatically lost a lot of money. I couldn't do anything from there on so I gave up on it.

i started as a player with the galaxy, then moved to man u for a year, then signed with real madrid. played there for 2 years, and they offered me a player/manager contract. i can now buy players, but haven't started the season yet.
i know this doesn't help at all, but i'll bump this whenever i try to sign some guys

I did it. But it took forever. Let me break down what it took, because it was quite ridiculous:
Started at DC United, won the MLS, got hired by LA Galaxy, won the MLS again, then go a job offer from Portimao in the Portugese league. I jumped at my first opportunity to get to Europe, but my team was terrible. I played 2 seasons with them, won the league and cup first year, then pretty much simulated the secod year and got fired.
Then I got a job offer from Copenhagen which I took. Played for them for 3 seasons, all of which I easily won the league and cup and managed to win Champions League my second season, but the job offers never came, even though by this point my manager reputation was 5 stars, highest possible.
I got pretty aggravated because I thought for sure I would get an invite from one of the four top leagues (EPL, SPL, Bundesligue, or Serie A).
I never did.
So after another season I accepted a job w/ a bundesligue 2 team, realizing the only way I'd get there was to win a 2nd tier league and get promoted, which I did. After winning Bundesligue 2 and the German cup I got a job from Hanover in Bundesligue.
Quite ridiculous, IMO...
