I'd imagine he wil cover it with some type of plastic sheeting with sand bags on top in order to hold it in place. Erosion wouldn't be as much of an issue if he does this.

Yep, I was thinking the same thing. Lay a bunch of visqueen over it and erosion won't be an issue.
