i think in the long run not being open to it is bad for american soccer. they obviously have far greater success in attendance then tv ratings. and it seems historically soccer popularity is rooted in individuals allegiance to their home team. but thats kind of cut off at the knees if only 20-30 cities in america get home teams and everyone else is stuck with permanently minor league teams.
other then assurance of permanent inclusion in profit sharing etc. and monopolization of the domestic presentation of the sport. i dont see the pros for them doing this (in pursuit of 'growing' the game)???

It would also be a good reason to drop the current MLS playoff system. Currently, they allow 10 teams in order to keep fans who have no chance at finishing near the top of the table interested in late-season matches. However, with a relegation system, fans of teams toward the bottom of the table would be interested in late-season matches because they don't want their team relegated (just like other leagues around the world).
I've never really bought the whole idea/argument that Americans are somehow in love with the idea of a playoff system in their sports more than fans in other nations are.

Louisiana just switched to this system for youth club soccer beginning with 2011-12 season.

I haven't either, but its not about that. It's all about the $$$. And there would be a huge drop in revenue for a club from a top division to a second division. Americans don't want to go watch a team that can't compete for the top. Just look at football ticket sales for teams like Carolina last year. I mean, the place was half empty. Just imagine if they got relegated and never got a chance to compete for the Super Bowl.

Yeah I guess so. I'd be worried the MLS would turn into an SPL-like league though where the lower teams can't ever build themselves back up enough to challenge the ones that have been there for years and years.

Absolutely not. Fans of other teams would be interested in those late season matches, though.
Relegation is fun for the outside viewers, not fun for the people battling it out.
I like playoffs because it keeps the season interesting at the end.
Man U has basically had a stranglehold on the EPL since the beginning of the season. There is no championship battle over there right now. What helps maintain interest is the battle for Champions and Europa league spots.
We don't have that luxury here.
