Well, this is how I see it...
The dude is a solid writer who's delivered some of the best reading experiences I've ever had.
He's in no big hurry to finish the series. Maybe he's not in love with the story and characters like he used to be. I can understand that.
Are people frustrated by all of this? Yeah. I can understand that, too.
But George R.R. Martin is the guy who controls the Starks and the Lannisters and all of those characters we love to read. It's going to get done when he does it. We need to let go of that.
Martin is big enough to where money won't motivate him, or pressure from fans or anything. Ultimately, that's probably a good thing, because he's going to tell HIS story and not what WE want or what his publisher wants. It's a great thing to be an author with the ability to say, "no" to everyone else's "great" ideas.
When the book gets here, if you want to read it, read it and choose to like it or not. If you've had enough of Martin's bullshite, don't read it. Martin has the power to create Westeros... but you have the power to destroy it (as far as yourself is concerned) by not giving a crap about it anymore.

I have to respectfully disagree. The worst thing that can happen to an author or director or really any creative person is to be above the editor. It's almost a given that an author's work suffers when they become so famous and well loved that no editor or publisher will say so much as ,"Boo." to them. Their work suffers and becomes less focused.
Not exactly in the same purview but look it what happened to M Night Shyamalan. Once he was given carte blanche his movies went downhill quickly.
