I spent a summer in Chattanooga as a college intern National Park Ranger at the Chickamauga battle field.
Not much there on the food scene other than country cookin' (and the usual chains - Krystal's all over the place - that's where they started)
Two places i usually went to for lunch were a place called Park Place (right outside the gates to the park i worked), and Bea's, which was a place that had a lazy susan in the center of the tables with an assortment of things like fried chicken, greens, black eyed peas, mac and cheese, etc.
If you're looking for more formal, fine dining, you'd probably look downtown by the river. They've really redeveloped it in recent years, and its small enough that everything is in walking distance.

For a city it's size it has some very good restaurants. If you're just breezing through and want a relaxed meal definitely head downtown. It shows what money well spent looks like. They have several pretty good local restaurants depending on what you're in the mood for.
