Prepare a one page summary about yourself and insurance needsand send it to several insurance companies and request a quote.(take bids)
In most states you are required to have at least liability insurance.
As far as credit reports, go to freecreditreport.com and request yours. You are allowed one per year.

In my experience it is cheaper getting quotes online. Some of the bigger companies offer discounts when ordering online, because it is less work for them. But to be safe you could compare quotes online, pick the best offer and try a local agency to see if they can match it or do better.
I recommend this site for online comparing: https://www.quotes-center.com/auto-insurance-calculator

Are the quote websites any good?
Mine was with Geico, I also purchased the online quote. I was even able to compare the amounts of coverage.
