Hard drive issues...

I have an external hard drive that clicks when it first comes on and my computer is not picking the hard drive. My wife knocked it off the table and it started doing this. Is it ruined?

The first sound of a hard drive gone bad is the clicking noise. Most likely ruined.

What's the odds of the data being recovered if sent off to one of those place that does that type of work?

I've never used one of those services but I imagine they feast upon recovering accidentally deleted data... not data that may have been destroyed when the r/w head slammed against the platters. Guess it really all depends on the amount of physical damage done.

The bill for that type of work can get into the thousands of dollars, so how much is this data worth to you?
I would first pull the drive out, put it in a ziploc and throw it in the freezer. After an hour or two, take it out and quickly put it back in the machine, boot up and copy as many files to a good drive as possible.
