i think if i were going to kill a bald eagle, either if i knew what it was when i shot it or if i wasnt sure and didnt want to get caught, i would probably do more than "hide it behind a tree"
Isn't the fine for killing a black bear in LA some huge number? Why would the fine for killing an animal THAT important be so small in comparison?

Killing a bear violates state law and the federal Endangered Species Act, and violators are subject to penalties of up to $50,000 and six months in jail. In addition, a civil restitution fine of $10,000 per bear will be imposed on anyone convicted of killing a black bear.

Bald Eagles are no longer on the "Endagered" or "Protected" list. They are in the "Least Concerned" category.
If you would have killed one 10 years ago, then you would be facing consequences similar to killing a black bear.
