Deer Calls/Rattling

Any of you deer hunters use a deer call and/or rattle deer in to your area with horns? If so what are some of the techniques you use?

I use a grunt call every once in awhile. I always have one around my neck in case I see a big buck running.
During the rut, I'll hit two or three times throughout a hunt. Haven't been very successful, only grunted in a small 6 with it.

Depends on where you're hunting. I never had any luck with it in NW La, but I could rattle up bucks all day in Texas.

I grunted in an eight point last week in St. Helena Parish.

I hunt in Ferriday, La. I tried using my call when I saw a doe within the outskirts of my food plot, I made a couple of soft bleats but didn't bring her in any closer. With the rut starting for us after Christmas I would like to know what other techniques have been working for others. I was thinking about giving the horns a try and see if I couldn't rattle in a buck maybe.

I successfully rattled one up last year for the first time. I smashed my rattle bag together for 30 seconds or so and about 20-30 seconds later a buck came hauling arse in.
that is the only time it worked for me. I usually use my grunt to get the deer to change direction and that has worked several times.

A lot of it depends on where you hunt. If you hunt in a place where the buck-to-doe ratio is good then it is more effective. When there are tons of does-to-bucks then the bucks aren't nearly as aggressive during the rut.

That's good to know, thanks for the info.

Naw. Just be there b/w Christmas and New years... bucks will be chasing big time in Concordia Parish. Leave the rattling horns at the camp.

Yeah, I've had a nice 8 pt. on my trail cam so I'm hoping to get a crack at him in the next couple of weeks. We shall see...
