my suggestion is to not put them on a team
it's a cash cow and it's ridiculous for a 9 yr old to be on a "travel team"

Abso-fricking-lutely.
These teams are ridiculous to begin with. Total waste of money unless your kid is really good. The not so good kids ride the pine almost the entire time, while the parents are still stuck dishing out money for hotels to follow the team.
My son is only 1 1/2, but I can promise you that this will never be an option.
