Okay guys. I have really benefited from learning to play with opacity on my eraser and brushes. Hue, Sat, and contrast have helped smooth the edges too.

Layers. If you have already figured out how to use layers, start playing with the layer properties (or blending mode depending on your software platform).
I often use:
Multiply
Additive
Screen
Overlay
Each mode is good for different things. Play with it a bit and let me know if there any questions.
