Mindless, thoughtless shooter games are what is becoming popular. RPGs simply require too much thought and too much patience to play. I haven't played Dragon Age, not big on those dungeons and dragons type games, but Fallout 3 was one of the best games I've played and I am very much looking forward to New Vegas. You're right though, lots of RPG seems to be dying out.

2 reasons I think.
Most of the recent single player RPG's have been sub-par.
More and more people seem to want their gaming time to be a social event.
I play LOTRO. Why would I want to play a single player RPG when I can be online playing LOTRO with my friends as a group.

Condescending pricks also turn people off of them. Honestly, what did it for me is most RPGs are about things I couldn't pretend to care about. My favorite was always Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario to a lesser extent. I thoroughly enjoyed Fallout 3 because lets face it, who doesn't want to kill some crazy arse post apocalypse zombies.
