Hear me out, I'm just trying to make sense of this whole situation and not resign to the fact that we just got our asses kicked again and again squandered a great opportunity. Over the last 4 years no other team (Florida, Bama, Auburn) has gotten the better of us like the Hogs. Even in 06 we barely escaped and easily could have lost in 09. Arkansas has really been a thorn in our side, and could have easily derailed our championship run in 07 and did derail our BCS hopes this year. Do you see this as 4 isolated incidents (boring conclusion) or is there more to it than that? Is it the team, the Thanksgiving holiday, the time of year?

Would we have the same results if we played Mississippi State in the last game of the year over Thanksgiving? Are we just emotionally drained by this point and they treat this game much more seriously than we do? We always bring our A game for Alabama and Florida and usually Auburn. Ole Miss and Arkansas ALWAYS bring it when they play us.

Clearly the fans don't take this game as seriously, maybe if it happened in mid October it would be different. I doubt the players and coaches feel this way but it seems like this lathargic attitude every time we take the field against Arkansas regardless of the circumstances.

Arkansas has this thing we call an Offensive Coordinator and a QB

also a head coach that understands their importance

Also Nutt had them pumped up and ready to play against us year after year. He must have something against LSU. His teams always play us hard.

I just dont buy the emotionally drained thing. We lose even if there's a lot at stake.

I think LSU players and fans see this game as a forced "rivalry" and do not really get up for it.

On the other hand, Arky circles this game as their biggest rivalry and beating LSU makes their season.

Basing these opinions on discussions with Arkansas fans and my personal feelings.

It means everything to them to beat us and they are just another SEC west opponent to us.

I completly agree from the fan perspective but it seems to carry over on the field as well. It's like when we play ULL, except Arkansas is actually good.

But if you have a lot to play for - like NCG or a BCS bowl then our coaches should get the team ready to play. No?

nah, and i'm not sure why LSU fans seem to have this misconception.

it's a big game because it usually has big consequences (e.g. 2006 possible national championship for arkansas if we win out, 2007 spoiler to eventual NCAA champs, this year, keeping Arkansas's BCS bowl chances alive, etc.). it's not a true rivalry, and most Arkansas fans i know don't think it is. just another big SEC game against a historically good opponent

also, if your "LSU players and fans" can't get up for the final game of the season with a lot on the line just because there's a "forced" trophy attached to it, i don't know what's wrong with y'all. it's almost always a great game.

I think it is the time of the year. I can't remember the last time we kicked their arse. Last year we could have lost, the year before that we should have won and then in 06, if Nutt didn't make Casey Dick throw the ball and just ran McFadden, they would have won that one.

yeah, here's the big misconception. i really don't know where LSU fans get this idea. have you ever heard a hog fan say this? even hint at this?

arkansas fans were sleeping out in tents for our game against Alabama this year. not so for LSU, ever, that i can recall. it's another big SEC game and gets the respect it deserves, but nobody I know thinks it's a rivalry.

I don't necessarily think we look at this as the determining factor for a good or bad season, but if it's true that LSU only looks at this as another game, and we look at it as the key game, I wouldn't mind it staying that way. I'll take any advantage we can get.

I agree too. Hell, there only 8 SEC football games a year. Maybe this continued arse kicking will breath some life into the "rivalry" from our end. It certainly needs to.

Hear me out

I hear you.

The fact of the matter is that Arkansas isn't as bad as most LSU fans want to believe. LSU is only 7-6 in the last 13 games vs Arky.
They were a MUCH better addition to the SEC than USC - who has only beaten LSU twice in 19 games.

Hoot Gibson used that to his advantage at Tulane. He knew LSU was usually flat for the last game. He knew he had an inferior team but he would get them jacked and they would come in and play LSU off their feet.

You asking about the team or the fans?

To me it looked like LSU's team was kidnapped from their beds early Friday morning with pillow cases over their heads, stuffed into a van, driven around in circles backwards all day and then dropped at WMS around 2:00 for the 2:30 kickoff.

I can handle hard fought loses, but I thought LSU looked rather clueless for the greatest portion of the game.

Congrats to Arkie for coming out prepared to play and executing their game plan. As far as my beloved Tigers go, all I've got for them is one big

I have family in Little Rock that all went to UofA and they all (and all their friends) treat this as THE biggest rivalry game since they left the old SWC and don't have to play Texas anymore.

You should see Little Rock the week of thanksgiving. They DESPISE LSU. I've been going to this game since 2002 the miracle on markham.

True. They always have playmakers, a stout o-line and an imaginative game plan. They make more big plays than we have, at least in 2007 and 2010. Long story short, they've outplayed us in at least 2 of their recent victories. They're good, we're good, they play better, they win. Sorry it isn't more complicated or mysterious than that ... but it isn't.
