Pretty sure the student body said they were going to do it as a joke but it's still pathetic.

Here's the story:

A few weeks ago, someone wrote to the Observer (school paper) that since all seniors are allowed on the field after the final home game every year (win or lose, blowout or close game, big opponent or terrible team), and that (assuming we beat Tulsa) getting blown out by Utah would make the senior class the losingest class in school history and that the seniors shouldn't just walk on the field, but storm it in recognition of such an accomplishment. Of course, it was a joke.

It turns out that "record" was actually set against Tulsa. However, after Utah today, the seniors started to go on the field, but in a sense stormed it, out of excitement. After a bit of every other section standing around, waiting for the alma mater, they saw the seniors and kind of followed their lead and started to rush as well. If it wasn't senior day, basically, I don't know/think we would have rushed.

But anyway, who really cares? Yes, we rushed the field. In case you've never done it, it's a pretty fun thing to do. Older people too often look at stuff college kids do (like this and the "overrated" chant, for example) from their mindset, not those of college kids, and critique. Let's weigh the two options to college kids: "Let's not have fun and rush the field, because that team is only a Mountain West team", or "To hell with it, let's just go". College kids aren't thinking about the "message" it sends. Nobody is thinking this is some amazing win. Nobody thinks that ND is "back" because of this. It is a good win, though, given ND's recent past, and it could help change the program's direction. But most of all it's just a fun thing to do. It's less about the win, more about the act of it.
