Mine sears fine if you put the meat on the edges of grille like the salesman told me. I love mine, no flare ups in 6 years of cooking.

Sometimes when the gas ia low, it does not get hot enough. If I turn the tank upside down real quick, it helps. I'm goin to put my crawfish regulator on it and see if I can get some more heat to it to cook steaks. On the other hand, with it not getting too hot, it cooks chicken, burgers, ribs, brisket perfect. Won't dry out ur meat if u watch it.
