I watch other college football teams and I see their receivers getting open and catching the ball and running with it. I rarely see LSU's receivers that wide open. What's up with that? Play calling, scheme, what?

Did you watch the game this weekend? JL hit WRs in stride quite a bit.

I've seen the same thing the past several years now—not on every single play of course, but in general, it often appears to me that opposing receivers get separation on us, but we rarely do the same. I think some of it has to do with the softer coverage we've seen from the Tiger defense in recent years. I think that's tightened up this season—we're playing closer to the opposing receiver; that's my impression. As for why we rarely seem to get much separation from our defenders ... I don't know. Probably some of it has to do with the problems we've had at QB.

How are open receivers being any help when we have no one to throw the ball to them. If Les will give JL more playing time who knows.

I am no expert but I think you hit it right on the head. It has to do with our QB and the play calling. This past weekend was the first time this year that I can remember our receivers going deep and we throwing to them. I think the other coaches know that we will throw the ball on short routes and therefore have their DB's play us tight as they can because there is no way we are going long (until this past weekend). Just saying

When you say you rarely see LSU receivers getting open, what is your view point? Your couch or from in the stadium?

Couch in my case. Over the past couple years, it's seemed to me that opposing receivers get more open more often than ours do. Then again, I only see what the TV camera sees.

For this year and the last two years, I can tell you from sitting in the stadium that LSU has had receivers running wide open quite often. The quarterbacks locking in on one receiver and inablity to go through progressions is the problem.

Well that is one perspective I don't have. I am watching from home on TV. Not having the QB that can get it to them does pose a problem. Thanks for the insight.

When JJ is QBing they probably figure, What's the point of getting open?

When JJ is playing theres not any point in going deep because he's going to wait until they get covered to throw or make a poor throw. Might as well stay close to the line of scrimmage and wait for one of Crowton's dumbass option plays or pick up the ball when one of the other receivers gets hammered and loses it because JJ can't hit his man in stride or get it to him without him having to leave his feet.
