Just think muffler. All a silencer does is allow the gas to expand and not leave the barrel at super sonic speeds. They are merely mufflers for guns. You do sacrifice muzzle velocity and therefore range/energy when using a silencer.

Incorrect. Muzzle velocity speeds up with a can, also zero changes for most weapons.
