I didn't hear the quote, but they were talking about that on the postgame show. When they were talking about it, my impression was that they were referring to the read option (not the sprint option with a pitchman)...and the major advantage was that the coaching staff liked to be have the option of throwing out of that formation.

Most of the time, JJ fricks up the option because he doesn't run parallel to the line of scrimmage. He arcs backwards away from the defensive end and into the zone where the pitch man should be. He needs to run straight at the DE and force him to choose. The way JJ runs the play, the DE approaches into the backfield and buys more time for the cornerback to assist with the tackle. The angle created for the DE when JJ backslides away from the line, allows for the DE to be in position to make the tackle on either the QB or the Tailback.
