.223 is cheaper because it is more plentiful and everybody makes it. I think FN is the only one who produces the 5.7 ammo. .17 ammo is about the same as 223, but more sparce and harder to find in bulk. Much smaller cartridge though.
5.7 - 1000 rounds - $409.99
.223 - 1k rounds - as cheap as $275
.17HMR - 1k rounds - about $280

Those should be shipped prices on cheap target rounds

Cool gun but look into ammo prices before you purchase. Its not cheap.

Goddamn price of ammo is the only thing keeping me from picking up an AR style gun. At 8 bucks and up for a clip of .223, I couldn't afford to shoot it enough to warrant the investment. Oh well, I guess I'll have to be content plinking around with .22lr's.

Same here really. Was thinking that the AR57 was a cheaper initial investment at $900, but it sounds like I'd catch up with the $1300-1500 AR15 quick.
I read something a while back that 10-15 years ago the ARs were $600 base model and made shitty. Adjusted in Obama dollars, that's around $1300. They said that they are made so much better now; it is well worth it.
I'm thinking that the prices will only go up??

Same here. I don't care what the gun costs. I care about the cost of shooting it. And I'm not interested in reloading.
ETA: We are lucky that .22LR ammo is so cheap. I would pay 3 times the price and still think it is a bargain.

ARs are pretty easy to build and its not to hard to do it for less than 1K, it wont be top notch components but the rifle will definitely be a fun shooter with no reliability issues, then slowly upgrade it when you realize what you need out of the gun
