First off, not particularly for this game, but for the season:

LSU...6-16 vs. number last 22 at Baton
Rouge; 2-17 vs. number as SEC host under HC Les Miles!

quote:

*Lsu 19 - North Carolina 14—Impossible to make an unequivocal
recommendation on this game at TGS press time, as NCAA investigations at
North Carolina making it entirely unclear exactly which players will be taking
field for Tar Heels in opener. When at full strength in 2010, Carolina should
have one of nation’s top defenses, while its offense has lots of questions to
answer after failing to hold up its end last season. LSU possesses some NFLcaliber
stoppers of its own, so “under” the total a strong possibility if gnarly Heel
“D” not stripped bare by suspensions. (at Atlanta, GA) TV—ABC
(DNP...SR: LSU 5-1)

According to Phil Steele ...

quote:

† North Carolina 20 Lsu 13 - Chick-fil-A College Kickoff in the Georgia Dome with tickets evenly split and a sellout expected. LSU last faced an ACC school in the ‘08 Chick-fil-A Bowl in this dome and whipped GT 38-3 as a dog. This is their 3rd trip here in 6 years (6-1 SU all-time here) while NC has not played in a dome S/’02. NC is the much more veteran team with 19 st’rs back and most of their starting defensive players are at the top of the draft boards for next year (provided no susp by NCAA investigation). LSU finished #17 LY but only has 10 st’rs back and despite being 9-4 was outgained by 23 ypg in ‘09! This is a great game to open the year and important for both leagues but we will call for the Tar Heels to come out on top as long as the majority of their players are cleared to play.

So as long as no more than 11 players are suspended, UNC should get the win. Thanks, Phil.

Possible player suspensions could mar this marquee opening match-up as
several North Carolina starters are being investigated for possible NCAA
infractions. No team can match the experienced NFL-level talent on defense
that the Tar Heels have but UNC does not always put it all together for a
great performance. The offense also tends to put the defense in bad
positions as senior QB T.J. Yates threw 15 interceptions last year. The main
weakness for LSU could be a young offensive line and like UNC inconsistent
QB play has been an issue in Jordan Jefferson’s two seasons. LSU went 9-4
last season but there were several narrow escapes and the Tigers were
actually statistically out-gained on the season despite allowing less than 17
points per game. LSU has not been a winning ATS team in any of the last
three seasons but with a narrow line LSU’s S/U history early in the season
has been unrivaled, particularly in neutral site games. Given the clouds and
distractions surrounding the Tar Heels LSU could be in a favorable spot to
pull out a huge win that will put the Tigers back on the map. LSU BY 6

Now we know how Butch Davis gets all those blue-chippers. Davis’ speech
to prospective recruits must go something like this: “Not only will my nanny
write your papers and take your tests, but my wife will polish your pistols and
wax your Vettes.” These latest allegations are extremely upsetting because
we were all set to pounce against Clue-Les Miles and his roar-less Tigers.
However, with the uncertainty in Chapel Hill, the only thing we’ll lay is in the weeds and wait to strike at a later date. It’s too bad as the numbers
support a Tar Heel victory. For starters, NC is a productive 5-2 SU and 6-1
ATS versus the SEC since 1990 while Davis is a tutoring 11-5 ATS as a dog with
the Heels. While we should point out that Miles is 3-0 SU and ATS versus the
ACC, he is just 1-5 ATS as a non-conference favorite of six or less points. Even
with multiple Tar Heels’ suspensions expected, we have no interest in laying
points with an LSU bunch that returns only 10 starters and dropped three of
its fi nal fi ve contests last season, losing the stats battle in all fi ve. Even the
once feared Bayou Bengal defense slipped statistically for the third year in a
row. With Les seemingly fi nding more ways to lose games than win them of
late, we have no problem going the extra mile and letting you know that the
Tigers will appear on our ‘play against’ list quite a bit this season.

No secrets, but I have plenty of experience on both sides.

Come on.........this dude sounds more like a fan than a gambler.

And defense slipped for 3rd year? In what category?

From Jimmy Boyd........

quote:

The Chik-Fil-A kickoff classic is held annually in Atlanta, GA and the 2010 match-up features two heavy hitters. The 18th ranked North Carolina Tar Heels have a nasty defense that features possibly six first round NFL draft picks. How many of those players will actually suit up against LSU is still unknown due to infractions during the off-season that has the program being investigated by the NCAA. LSU has question marks on offense, but always brings top level talent to the table. The Tigers come into the game ranked 16th. North Carolina is a 2.5 point favorite.

Les Miles is on the hot seat in Baton Rouge following a 9-4 season. LSU expects SEC titles for their storied program and they have not been contenders the past two years. Jordan Jefferson could be the X factor for the Tigers in 2010 as the junior quarterback has not played up to expectations yet. His numbers were not bad a year ago, throwing for over 2100 yards and 17 touchdowns with just 7 interceptions. LSU lost their top two running backs from last year and will lean on a stable of backs this season. Stevan Ridley has the most experience and will likely get the majority of the carries. Terrance Toliver will move in as the top option in the passing game following a 53 catch junior year. Losing Brandon LaFell could hurt the offensive production through the air, but there are plenty of players at this position looking to make a name for themselves. The Tigers have been notorious for churning out top defenses each season and last year was no different. They held opponents to just 16 points/game and have four starters back from that squad. Points will come at a premium against North Carolina.
Butch Davis has likely not slept much the past month leading up to their primetime opener vs. LSU. Not only does he have to prepare for a tough team, but allegations of players receiving improper benefits from agents and tutors have circulated throughout the country. The Tar Heels were a sleeper pick to vie for a national title with 19 returning starters before the allegations were made. UNC has to get better play out of the quarterback position and TJ Yates returns with three years as a starter under his belt. Redshirt freshman Bryn Renner should push Yates for the starting job due to the fact that Yates threw more interceptions than touchdowns in 2009. Ryan Houston and Shaun Draughn are big time running backs that compliment each other. WR Greg Little is the most electric player on offense for the Heels and caught 62 passes for five touchdowns a year ago. Starters on the defensive side of the ball have been delegated to the scout team leading up to the opener leaving the status of the starting 11 in doubt. If the starters in question are cleared to play, expect a hard hitting game from both teams.
This line hasn’t moved much with so much uncertainty surrounding this match-up. If North Carolina fields all 19 returning starters, I would favor them in the game but that information is still unavailable currently. LSU struggles against top flight defenses and with it being the first game for both teams a low scoring affair is likely. I just can’t lay points on a team that might be a half strength so I like the +2.5 on the LSU side.

Play: LSU +2.5

I don't consider him an expert. I simply enjoy reading a perspective, right or wrong, from someone that is not too close to either program.

I make my own conclusions. It's my money, so if I am going to lose, I'd rather it be based off of my own opinion.
