Nadal defeats Fed in 4 sets to officially take over his reign as the #1 tennis play in the world.

I'm picking Graeme McDowell as my sleeper.

Fed. In straights. Over....whoever.
Fed is going to reassert himself and I like his run in Cinci, as proof that he's still got it.

Nadal hasn't looked too hot on the fast hard courts so far. I think he gets taken out prior to the final. I'm going with a Federer/Murray final.

That's what I'm thinking too. Murray and Berdych are both in Nadal's draw along with Nalbandian and that's gonna be some tough sledding. If his backhand doesn't improve then he might not make the quarters.
Fed's draw looks kinda tough but they all hafta play each other before him. He'll probably have Soderling in the quarters and then Roddick or Rish (or Djokovic if he learns how to play consistent tennis) in the semis.
I'll say:
Murray d. Nadal (6-4)(5-7)(7-6)(6-4)
Federer d. Roddick (6-4)(7-6)(6-7)(6-3)
And then I'm not sure about the finals. Would hafta watch how both are playing to pick but right now I'd say Fed in 4.

LOL at John Buccigraf (spelling?). Just shows how little so many people know about tennis.

Fed in straight sets over Murray

SF: Murry over Nadal
SF: Federer over ???
Finals: Murray v. Federer
Those look like the safe picks that everyone is going with. I'm still not sold on Roger making it through, even with his recent performances at the US Open Series. Regardless as to who makes it through on Federer's side, I like Murray to make it through to the finals and finally win a GS title.

If Nadal finally makes it to the final against Fed, he has Fed's number and will take him down in 3 sets easy.

There is absolutely no chance in hell anyone is going to straight set Federer at the Us Open. Absolutely zero. Nadal might beat him if they play (I'd probably favor him), but it will be a good match. And from a pure tennis perspective that match will rest solely on Roger's racket. He should thrash Nadal on this surface, but I wouldn't trust his will or mental fortitude against Rafa.

I don't think anyone thought Fed would lose in 4 sets to Berdych at Wimbledon either. And I don't think anyone would have given any chance in hell of him almost going out in the first round to some srub in that tournament either. Even though Fed did well in those 2 warmup tournaments, I thought he still looked a little off. Still not playing at the level he was last year. It wouldn't surprise me to see Fed take another early exit in this GS either.

He's playing noticeably better now than he was prior to the FO or Wimbledon. The guy hadn't won a single tourney all year since the AO and then went finals, championship in back to back masters beating Berdych, Djokovic, Davydenko, Baghdatis, and Fish (who's playing great tennis). He's clearly playing better than everyone other than possibly Murray going into the USO. I watched all of his matches at both Toronto and Cincy. I was still concerned with his play in Toronto but thought his movement was noticeably better than it had been at Wimbledon. He still wasn't hitting the ball cleanly, but that came around at Cincy. His forehand was on fire that entire tournament.
I do agree that he could go out early as he has Soderling in the quarters (if you consider that early). That will be a tough match if Soderling makes it that far. There's absolutely no chance he goes out before that though, and like I said before there is zero chance anyone, including Nadal, beats him in 3 on that court.

I can't figure out what the problem is with Rafa's backhand. In Cincinnati against Baghdatis he went stretches where he looked very tentative off that side. Obviously, his forehand is his big/favorite shot, but I don't remember his backhand being a liability.
In fact, commentators used to always point out (but not anymore) how strong his backhand was because his naturally stronger right hand was on the top of the racket on his backhand.
If he plays in the open like he did against Baghdatis, he won't have to worry about Fed because he'll never get that far.

The improvement in his backhand (along with his serve) is what allowed him to beat Federer on surfaces outside of clay. It really was a weapon and, like you, I don't know what the hell was wrong with it recently. If he doesn't get it figured out he'll make it to the quarters at best.
I did hear the announcers say that he's a guy who likes to tweak lots of things and work on stuff before Slams so maybe he was doing that, but he was miss-hitting balls 10-15 feet out.

Isn't Nadal already officially the #1 player in the world?
