Report from a Charter Captain friend in Buras

Sent this to me today.
He guides out of Buras.
I was just out there with him several weeks ago and we were absolutley smashing the trout and there were gulls diving in huge flocks for as far as the eye can see.
I had my 2 kids with me and my little girl was reeling in the fish and putting them in the boat all by herself for the first time in her life.
Fishing artificials on the bottom too!
I am not happy to be reporting this.

Just wanted to let you know the trout are heavy on the beach on the West side out of Joshua’s. Limit of hogs yesterday with customers and headed back at ‘em this morning in the Tiger with 2 more customers. I was fishing Friday and made a run to get in the birds above California point only to notice a redish color to all the water from there to almost Delacroix. Assumed it was what we call ‘mullet’ water. On my way back after not seeing a single bird and trying to figure out what was wrong, my motor shut down with the horn going off. I knew it had run out of oil, so I got in the back, took the cowling off and refilled the little oil bottle inside the motor. As I was replacing the cowl, I noticed that the water was separating right behind my motor. It was OIL from the Spill! That whole area was covered with oil that was sandwiched between the salt water on the bottom and the fresh river water on the top! You could run through it, stop and look back and a line would come up showing you right where you just ran! That’s why there were no birds or trout in the entire bay!!
