I never understood why he showed up in the old picture at the end? Did it represent Jack becoming a part of the hotel? I dunno it always confuses me. Damn you Stanley Kubrick.

Just that Jack's ghost was a part of the hotel in the end.

I thought it was more Jack's present day spirit was the reincarnation of that older jack and was fated and doomed to repeat the original Jack's tragedies that haunted the hotel.

It was part of the prop mechaism used to make the blood gush out of the elevator rather than just kind of pour out.
