Let me know if my math is wrong or if I left out a scenario.

you have quite a few mistakes on there where you didn't apply points for ties

Where at?

If we lose to Algeria, they would have more points than us.....we would be eliminated.

If we lose to Algeria, they will have at least 3 points, and we will have 2. We cannot advance if we lose.

i only see one, in line 16, where the US should have 3 points.. what else do you see?

Corrections made. Anything else?

The moral of this story appears to be that if USA win vs. Algeria, the likelihood of not advancing is very small (namely, England wins today--probable--and then plays Slovenia to a tie--possible, but improbable if England hasn't clinched already). Seem right?

You got it. So cheer for a tie or Alg win today and we control our own destiny.

Very well. But we'll be rooting for an improbable outcome.

Even if England does win today and then ties with Slovenia, we can advance if we beat Algeria by 2.

So basically, win by two and we control our own destiny.

Yeah, even if we win by 1, and England wins today and draws against Slovenia, we can advance if we score one more goal than Slovenia. Ex. England wins 2-0 today, England and Algeria draw 1-1, the U.S. can advance with a 2-1 win since the 2nd tiebreaker is goals scored (the U.S. would have 5 and Slovenia would have 4).

I think you root for a 0-0 tie today. If not that, an Algerian win.

That's the best way to go, IMO.

Yeah, that would be our only chance to advance on a tie.
