I had never seen this show, and on Memorial Day I started watching season 1 on demand and by the end of the week I got through both the first and second seasons. Excited for Season 3, except now I have to wait a week for new episodes

During the first season I tried to pick up all the clues about where exactly Bon Temps was located. I don't remember all the details but at first I was going with Mer Rouge, (mostly because of the French name, and also Bayou Bonne Idee), but there was something that made me change my guess to the Calhoun area outside W Monroe. I don't remember what brought me to hat conclusion though. Any theories?
ETA: The first time Bill takes Sookie to Fangtasia its mentioned that Shreveport is 1 hour away. Calhoun.

I am the premiere expert of the I-20 corridor due to my job.
The lady that wrote the books lives in Magnolia, 20 north of Springhill.
If she based it on a real town, it's not one an hour east of Shreveport along I-20.
No towns around Monroe are an hour from Shreveport.
There are no towns along I-20 that resemble Bon Temps.
Springhill, Hayensville and Homer are the only towns an hour from Shreveport that match. Springhill is out because it is against the the Ark state line and Arkansas isn't mentioned.
Since the author is from Magnolia, Ar which is closely tied to Hayenesville and Homer by a a main route into La. From there, if she had a real town in mind those are the best bets.

Bon Temps must be in a geographical anomaly. Didn't they drive to New Orleans to fly to Dallas? Yet it between Shreveport and Monroe.
ETA: shite, I don't remember if that was in the book or on the show.

They drove to Dallas if memory serves. I don't remember anything in the story line taking anyone farther south than Bunkie on I-49. BTW, when Sookie and Sam were coming back from Bunkie, there was a scene that showed them on Highway 61 which runs between Mansfield and Shreveport on the west side of the Red River. 71 runs on the East side of the Red.

I don't think Hwy 61 is ever on the West side of the MS river.
