SEC Defense

Howdy to all you SEC folks, I'm an Ag and I wanted to first say that I am amazed by the support you guys have shown in favor of Texas A&M joining the best athletic conference in the country! Now to the point of my post. I have been reading a lot of discussion regarding A&M's potential competitiveness in the SEC due to our, let's face it, 'porous' defense. We have yet to see new D-Coordinator Tim DeRuyter in action but judging by his past history of producing a hell of a defense with inferior talent at Ohio U, Nevada and Air Force, and with the assistant coaches hired this off-season (Dat Nguyen and Terrell William for example), I'm curious to see what you guys think A&M's defensive potential could be in regards to this move to the SEC? I'm holding out hope that we see significant improvement in DeRuyter's first year compared to what we Ag's have seen the past decade, which has been nothing short of pathetic. Thanks for any input on this fellas!

I guess we'll have to see. Reflecting back on the game with us, it's hard to say because Mallett and Co. are going to usually put up a lot of points on a lot of teams, and fast. (I'm not talking about the Alabama game Gumps ...or Ole Miss.lol) The area that we exploited, if I remember correctly, was with the OL and inconsistencies with protecting the QB. Who knows what next year will bring. I do hope we get to see the Aggies in our division before long.
It couldn't be any worse than ours in '08. '09 was a bit better. We have some serious questions regarding our defense too.

Porky you are dead-on about our game last year. We started hot, got a quick TD, got a 3 and out with a sack, and then it all went to hell when our defense came back to reality. The offense didn't help with the fumble and return for a TD, that kind of spelled the beginning of the end. I appreciate your comments, from what I've seen from SEC games we need to get a LOT faster and a LOT bigger to hold our own defensively if the Ag's get an invite, but I'm friggin' pumped about the thought of having the Hogs/LSU as conference games every year!

did you feel this way a year ago?

Texas A&M is a good geographical fit in the SEC ... but not a competitive fit. Yeah, we all expect A&M to fold against OU and Texas, but A&M consistently loses to North teams and Baylor on a yearly basis.

you know, Oklahoma can come too if you want to balance that out.

I'd love for OU to join to the SEC.

what's the overall consensus of the fanbase though? Is sticking to Texas' hip a popular idea?

Not sure how regular that is, 1 loss against Baylor since 1985 isn't exactly consistent. If you want to go back to the Fran years and dwell on that, feel free if that makes you feel better. I'm not here saying A&M is going to be a player in the SEC from year one. In fact, we'll be far from it. But long-term, I can't help but believe we will become more competitive in the SEC. I have always felt that the SEC is the best conference in the country and watching the games and results is the easiest way to prove it. The teams in the SEC simply go out and prove it on the field, just ask the horns.

Speaking as a Tiger fan, I think the thing we appreciate most is A&M's fans'unconditional passion and support for their team. That's what makes the Aggies such an attractive addition to any conference.
I know the team hasn't been that good of late--but that stadium is always packed and those fans are always crazy.
They'll fit right into the SEC.
Now will they win? That's another question entirely.

TAMU has a much higher ceiling than MSU. MSU doesn't have a quarter of the resources that TAMU has at its disposal. TAMU to the SEC would change everything for them.

Me too. I'm old enough to remember the days when the Aggies could really put it on anyone on any given day. I know if you guys do in fact join the SEC, you'll be back, and with a vengeance. It will be a lot different playing in this conference. It makes teams tough. There are no insured victories. We really had some tough transitional years in the early 90's.
Our weakest defense ever, IMO, was in '08. Petrino now has us back on track it seems. You guys will probably have more success at first than we did. I know a bit about the Aggies and their history. If y'all do come aboard, it won't take long before you're kicking some serious butt again. That's a fact.

He's a Sooner; he doesn't need to ask anyone.

I don't see how it would keep the top recruits in Texas from going to Oklahoma and Texas, especially if Oklahoma joins them in the SEC.
Texas A&M is bad, fellas. Their defense is absolutely laughable and has been for a while.
Last year for them was an "improvement" ... they went to a bowl by beating: New Mexico (ha), Utah State (ha), UAB (ha), Iowa State (ha), Baylor (ha) and Texas Tech (their one decent win).
They lost to Colorado (horrible) and Kansas State (no bowl).
They are going to have a ROUGH transition to a better conference. You guys will enjoy having a sure win on the schedule.

I'd honestly be happy going .500 the first year or two given the schedule and the freaking unreal talent in the SEC. I like where our offense is headed with Sherman, and now that he's got DeRuyter in place I can't help but think the defense will step it up. Here's how I see it.. either A&M's regents nut up and get this thing done, or we'll forever be in tu's shadow, and OU for that matter. I think I speak for all Ag's on here and on Texags when I say enough is ENOUGH. Their arrogance has gotten them a long way, I'll give them that. But A&M can stand on its own and I'm crossing every available appendage in hope that we make the right decision and make the move!

Texas and Oklahoma could have 100% Texan classes and there would still be some left over.

True fully, any team playing in the Big 12 will have trouble with the speed on both sides of the ball in the SEC not just TAMU. All of you all would.

Sooners, you of all people should be begging, praying to get out of the friggin' Pac-eleventybillion. You want to follow the uterus-shaped Austin mascot around for the next 20 years? Fine. Tag along, suck the teet, keep making Dodds happy. I'm not saying I want the Sooners in the SEC, and I do feel that beating OU for recruits is the #1 place that A&M has to start in order to improve. At least the Ag's are showing some balls by not following tu's lead and "threats" of being black-balled. Have fun in Palo Alto.

Eh, we've lost recently against Florida and LSU, but we played both tough as hell. In the end, they were the single best team in college football. Furthermore, I am told that Florida had the best player in the history of the world playing for them. The other 11 SEC teams were not the best team (nor did they have God on their team).
Occasionally we are going to lose to Arkansas or some of the other mid-level teams, it happens, but OU isn't going to fall in line with those programs.
OU/Texas = LSU/Florida/Alabama
OU/Texas/LSU/Florida/Alabama are superior to the other 9 SEC teams. Most of the other 9 are good, solid teams, sure, but those 5 have superior talent across the board and the results over the past 10 years show it.

AggiePride, There's a big difference being in the SEC than there is in any other conference. We support other SEC teams. We take a lot of pride in our conference strength and (most of the time) stand behind other SEC teams. We talk a lot of crap to one another but we know our conference's strength and that it's what makes all of us better. It's a win-win. There will be a lot of BS back and forth between us but no outsider will get the respect we show one another. That's no BS.
