Everyone seems to agree that the oil will kill the marsh grasses and in turn make our coastal wetlands more vulnerable to erosion. Lets say in 5 years after a substantial loss of wetlands occurs, a hurricane affects the Louisiana coast. Due to the loss of these wetlands, caused by the BP spill, a water surge is able to make its way further inland.

Will BP be held responsible for any of this future potential damage to homes, towns, etc?

I guess I am asking, how long (in terms of years)is BP's liability?

Marsh dies this year. After that any erosion should be said and done shortly after. A few high wind storms will make quick work of the dead marsh. I am thinking next year we get BP to pump a bunch of sediment where the marsh died to counter the erosion they caused and we end up with a small gain in marsh.

That is what would happen if I was in charge, anyway.

I doubt they would be held accountable for an act of God. At Least what their defense would be. I expect, if things get to Bad for BP they will file some type of Bankruptcy protection and reorganize under another name. Ive seen it happen before.

They won't be accountable for an act of God.

They will be held accountable for our succeptability to an act of God caused by their direct actions.

The should have assests seized instead of bankruptcy provisions.

Hopefully the anger would follow them if they reformed anyway and caused them more boycott.
