Top Kill Question

Ok, for all you engineers out there, what is the estimated bottom hole pressure, how heavy does the fluid need to be, how many bbls/min will they pump to contain this thing?

My question: why didn't they order this A MONTH AGO?

They've got at least one relief well being drilled. I think there is a second being drilled. They need a third rig for the Top Kill option. Additionally, they had to modify and/or repair the choke and kill lines. I'd imagine they've got to run 5000' of riser - how's 40 bbls a minute of heavy weight drilling fluid getting into the existing well bore?
Try and put your hatred of BP aside for a moment and consider, in a calm, logical, rational manner, this: What does BP gain by allowing this thing to continue to flow into the Gulf?
Nothing. Nobody wants to shut this fricker in more than BP.

probably true. However, with all the conflicting info they release it certainly appears otherwise.

I believe BP wants this over ASAP, my question is simple, what is the estimated bottom hole pressure, how heavy does the fluid need to be to contain this thing?

well, they TD'd the well at 18300' TVD w/ 14.0 ppg so 13322 psi.
w/ the riser gone and based on the BHP above, you'd need +16 ppg from the wellhead to TD to kill it.
i'm certain they'll pump as fast as all their pumping capacity available on location will allow.
ETA: the 16 ppg is an absolute minimum. i'm sure they'll role w/ something heavier

This plan was started a month ago, the resources required are huge, and have taken weeks to assemble.

Screw a month ago. Why didn't they have a plan in place already?
They're so busy conducting safety training and ridiculous measures for the workers because they're afraid of lawsuit yet they didn't have a concrete plan in place already in case something like this scenario happened.
Surely, the possibility that this would happen one day crossed somebody's mind. This is what amazes me.
