It will help significanlty. The annular is the area between the production tubing and the wellbore which is more then likely where the bulk of the blowout is occuring. Now if they get the shear rams to close that would be awesome. The shear rams have the ability to cut through the production tubing and close that off too.

Would help tremendously. If they can get the shears closed then that should do it.

i told ya'll two days ago that they had closed off 75 percent. everyone jumped my arse.

anyway, the annular is a big rubber element that closes around the drill pipe.

That would explain some of the overhead shots taken recently, but I don't understand why it wasn't reported? You would think BP would be sprinting to the microphones to give some good news for once.

Also, is this news worth one of these?:

Instead the CEO goes on TV and blames it on Transocean.

Yep, sad really. But it's also most likely in response to the POTUS placing all the blame on BP. When the very top starts pointing fingers, it's only natural for the one being blamed to try and deflect some of it. I don't think now is the time for anyone to be pointing fingers. A horrible accident occurred and there is a potential disaster for America out there. All hands on deck to overt disaster and then investigate and blame all you want.

let's say you have a 5 acre pasture. on your pasture, you would like to drill a water well. right next to your pasture fence, there is a your neighbor's garden. you hire a the drilling company to drill your water well. you pay them daily to complete this. you trust them to do it right. now, the well shoots water out uncontrollably and it starts to flood your neighbor's garden. the neighbor is gonna blame you. WHO ARE YOU GONNA BLAME?

No, it is more of just the way things tend to happen in the oilfield. There is going to be a lot of finger pointing when anything happens.

i understand your point...my point is that I would first do everyting possible to stop the flooding then investigate and blame afterwards.

believe me, they are doing everything to stop it. as a matter of fact, they have shut off 75 percent of the well two days ago. all the other shite is smoke in mirrors. that big funnel may never see the ocean floor. they have to show people around the country that they are, in fact, trying every method.

So how much do they think is leaking right now? Is it still considered a lot?

they never really knew how much was leaking in the first place. they just had to throw some numbers out there. hence the reason the numbers were so way off.

some were saying 5000
some said 20000
some said 5 x that amount

no way to calculate.

So we are just going to wait for the slick to stop growing to be able to tell how much they managed to control?

or, you can listen to the media and try to let their calculations (which are impossible) satisfy you.

You've given tons of really good information, and I really appreciate it...

Do you mind if I ask a REALLY stupid question?
