While I agree to a certain point, it can be a useful comparison for certain exceptional athletes. I have little question that Jim Thorpe could play safety or running back today in Division I, and perhaps the NFL. Cannon and contemporary Jim Brown would likewise have success in today's game, and at the professional level.

Would any of the three be dominant players today? Perhaps not, but the fact that their athleticism is objective and broad based (they were all exceptional multi-sport athletes), and they did not have the advantage of modern training and nutrition (Thorpe, especially) make their accomplishments even more impressive in hindsight.

Billy Cannon's time for the 40 was in yards, not meters. But, having said that, he would have been a star FB player in todays game. He didn't have all the strength and conditioning help then that players have now. Yes, he was a freak athlete. Tinsley was also. Tommy Casanova was too. Casanova was thought by Charlie Mac to be so valuable to the team that he didn't let him play offense much.
