I've mentioned before, when I saw this at the SLU student union theater in the late 80's, a big part of the crowd walked out after the first 20 minutes.

I think the message has lost a little of it's potency over the years as well.
Personally, I never had any qualms about the fact that his violent nature was artificially suppressed with aversion therapy (a treament for which he volunteered). The "unlucky" happenstance that he had to face his victims after he was altered and defenseless seemed more like karma and "just deserts" rather than a tragic extension of the man's inhumanity to man theme.
